About the Founder: Chase Owen
My name is Chase Owen, and I’m a Brazilian Top Team black belt under Professor Marcello Bergo. My jiu jitsu journey didn’t begin in Okinawa, but this island is where I grew the most as an athlete, a competitor, and as a member of a community that shaped who I am today.
I spent my early years in Okinawa competing in MMA and testing myself in every way I could. Over time, I shifted from competing to building. I’ve competed everywhere from small local MMA and BJJ shows to major events like Kaisai, and those experiences gave me a deep respect for the grind, the nerves, and the heart it takes to step onto the mat.
Now my focus is on growing the grappling scene here in Okinawa and helping strengthen the community that helped raise me. I want to highlight the incredible talent on this island, support young and hungry grapplers, and create opportunities for athletes to be seen and celebrated.
About the Okinawa Invitational
The Okinawa Invitational is a submission‑only grappling event created to spotlight the talent developing on this island and across Asia. It brings together experienced competitors, rising prospects, and young grapplers looking for a real stage to test themselves.
The Invitational exists to:
Provide a professional, competitive environment
Highlight Okinawa as a serious destination for grappling
Give visibility to new and upcoming athletes
Strengthen the community through high‑level matches
It’s an event built by people who have been on every side of competition, from small shows to big stages, and want to give others the same opportunities.
what is jiu jitsu champloo
The word “Champloo” comes from the Okinawan term chanpurū (チャンプルー), which means “to mix,” “to blend,” or “to bring different elements together.” It’s a concept deeply rooted in Okinawan culture seen in its food, its language, and its long history of absorbing influences from around the world.
That idea of blending is at the core of Jiu Jitsu Champloo.
The brand represents the mix of grappling styles, cultures, and experiences that shape the martial arts community in Okinawa and beyond. It reflects the island’s role as a crossroads for martial arts and its unique ability to bring people together through shared passion and open‑minded training.
Jiu Jitsu Champloo exists to:
Support the local grappling community
Showcase Okinawa as a hub for high‑level BJJ
Give rising and young athletes a place to shine
Share grappling culture, Japanese culture, and the stories that connect them
Bring people together through training, competition, and community
This isn’t just an event or a brand.
It’s a celebration of the “Champloo” spirit: a blend of cultures, experiences, and people coming together through jiu jitsu.
